Addiction Medicine Interest Geared Organization for Students (AMIGOS)Addiction affects approximately 20 million people. Substance use disorders (SUDs) are commonly encountered in all specialties of medicine and are instrumental in the development of chronic diseases. It is vital to provide preventative care and early intervention to reduce the risk of addiction and substance-related health conditions. Medical students do not receive enough exposure in medical education about addictive diseases and in trainings for addiction as part of the regular curriculum. The goal of our interest group is to provide our peers the opportunity to increase their knowledge, awareness, and skills to assess for SUDs, provide early intervention and make appropriate referrals for treatment of the disease.drexelamigos@gmail.com

Consciousness Research Interest GroupAs aspiring physicians, one of our role’s is to seek out new information, analyze the information, and explore the potential benefit new treatments and research may have for our future patients. There is nothing more fundamental to consciousness than the subjective feeling of an experience. Consciousness research has proven to be an actual and functioning discipline able to provide meaningful and reproducible results. The research at major medical universities, such as John Hopkins Center for Psychedelic and Consciousness Research, as well Multidisciplinary Association of Psychedelic Studies (MAPS), is bringing about a revolution across a spectrum of medical fields. The purpose or of the Consciousness Research Interest Group (CRIG) is to facilitate conversations in the DUCOM community regarding human consciousness to facilitate a better understanding of holistic human health. We would like to discuss the mechanisms targeted by new therapies and how they relate to substance use disorder, psychiatric disorders, and managing chronic pain. Psychedelics and their impact on human consciousness require further exploration by future physicians as their role in medicine overlaps with psychiatry, integrative medicine, neurology, gastroenterology, epigenetics, and public health.conciousnessresearchig@gmail.com

Integrative Medicine Interest GroupOver time, the definition of health has become skewed to mean simply the absence of disease. If you are not sick, you are considered healthy and no action is needed. Our current healthcare system focuses more on treating disease once it appears, instead of preventing it from happening in the first place. The goal of integrative medicine is to use evidence-based interventions to begin creating a healthcare system that prioritizes quality of life. Through this lens, people can learn that health is more than just absence of disease and take control of their lives. We want to tackle this large goal by merging modern medicine with modifications in areas such as nutrition, exercise, sleep, stress management, mindfulness, and so much more. This will also equip people with a variety of strategies to alleviate pain and discomfort from chronic conditions. Some of the services that interest us as a group include preventative medicine, functional medicine, mindfulness programs, optimal body weight management, mind-body therapy, and other domains of medicine that prioritize health as an optimal way of living.ducomintegrativemedicine@gmail.com

Nutrition in Medicine ClubPreventable chronic diseases have been on the rise over the past few decades, with no end in sight. Preventable and other types of chronic diseases are the leading cause of death and disability in America and are a top contributor to our healthcare costs as well. One of the reasons for this continuous increase in preventable chronic diseases is due to the lifestyle choices that have been made common practice across the country, especially nutrition. One way to start facing this issue head on is to put more effort and energy into preventative medicine. Although quality nutrition is crucial to minimize risk of chronic disease and improve quality of life, nutrition education isn’t a focus in medical school. Our goal as a club is to expose ourselves to nutrition, and to learn how to bridge the gap between nutrition and medicine. Our ‘why’ is powerful: so we can be more informed and prepared to best serve our patients in the future.ducomnutritioninmedicine@gmail.com

Students for a National Health Program (SNaHP)Students for a National Health Program (SNaHP) is a national organization that advocates for a single-payer healthcare in the United States, as opposed to the current for-profit system. We believe that a single-payer system will significantly reduce the cost of healthcare for Americans, expand access to care, and make progress towards medical equity among people of all ethnic, racial, and class backgrounds. We are closely affiliated with Physicians for a National Health Program (PNHP).

We hope to build consensus among medical professionals that single-payer is not only a more ethical, but also a more economical alternative. We will discuss the inefficient but highly profitable system of private health insurance, competing EHRs, and surprise billing; the non-consensual privatization schemes already underway in Medicaid/Medicare under the Biden administration; and the existential threat that price gouging poses to the doctor-patient relationship. We will hold a series of documentary viewings, debates, and teach-ins to do this. We also plan to support allied community action groups in Philadelphia and integrate into the larger struggle for health equity.

Critical Theory in MedicineCritical Theory in Medicine aims to foster and encourage curiosity for, and study of, social justice issues traditionally regarded to be outside of the scope of medicine in order to create the future multidisciplinary collaboration necessary in developing truly interdisciplinary questions with comprehensive solutions. This space will allow students to freely discuss issues that they touched upon in DUCOM curriculum (namely, Health Advocacy courses) and provide them with an opportunity to critically analyze inequalities from multiple different perspectives (e.g. antiracist, anticolonial, feminist thought, etc.), some of which are not touched upon in curriculum. This group will gather to discuss readings associated with critical theory topics, attend speaker events about addressing labor and social justice issues from perspectives including and outside of medicine, come together for creative writing sessions that aim to broaden students’ imagination for what an equitable world could look like and how we might get there, and connect students with the realities of struggles for justice across the city. This club will not only help to develop the new doctor-advocate graduating from DUCOM, but will give space to students who care deeply about human rights to understand more critically what is going on in the world and where they are in relation to it.criticaltheoryducom@gmail.com

Frog Hat ClubThe Frog Society traces its origins back to the start of the COVID-19 pandemic. The Class of 2024 had just started their first year at DUCOM, but it was virtual with little to no in-person activities. Everyone was meeting on Zoom, which while safe and efficient, was often impersonal and banal. This all changed when one student began wearing a green frog hat to Zoom meetings. His hat generated many laughs, creating joy where pain and suffering once were. This one student’s selfless act to facilitate laughter and friendship among his classmates led to the inception of the Frog Hat Society. The purpose of the Frog Hat Society aka Frog Hat Club is to create a safe and fun medium for students to laugh and connect with one another. All members receive a frog hat.ducom.froghats@gmail.com

Microbiology in MedicineThe mission of Microbiology in Medicine or, M-in-M, is to introduce the many roles that microorganisms play in medicine. Despite their tiny size, microorganisms have an immense position in human development and disease. This topic will be addressed through interactive discussions on current microbiological research, lectures from medical and research specialists in the world of microbiology and infectious disease, tours of medical and laboratory facilities to learn more about clinical microbiology, and educational activities with community organizations encouraging broader medical microbiological understanding among the residents of Philadelphia. The large world of microorganisms plays a crucial role in health and disease. Most obviously, infectious diseases and antibiotic resistance highlight the importance of microorganisms in human health. Less obvious, however, is the role that general microbiota play in maintaining human digestion, modulating human immune responses, and influencing the development of multifactorial diseases. The aim of M-in-M, is to incorporate the diverse microbiological world into the study of medicine with the goal of encouraging holistic care that addresses the multifactorial aspects of human health and disease.microbiologyinmedicine@gmail.com

Mothers and Baby DragonsThe goal of Drexel University College of Medicine’s Mothers & Baby Dragons (MBD) is to promote healthy pregnancies through one-on-one partnerships between low-income pregnant women and medical student companions who can help facilitate a healthy prenatal journey. College of Medicine medical students provide support to expecting mothers by accompanying them to prenatal appointments at the Women’s Care Center in Philadelphia, and regularly communicating with the mothers to discuss their unique challenges and successes throughout the pregnancy and during the baby’s first few months.

We believe that every woman deserves easily accessible resources to deal with the realities and challenges of pregnancy, and extra guidance and a listening ear can give these women the help they need to start a happy and healthy family. Our goal for medical students involved in this effort is to develop empathy, skills for effective communication with patients, and the drive to go above and beyond for patient care. We hope to develop champions for comprehensive and high quality care for underserved patients through advocacy, good listening, effective teaching, and providing inspiration and hope for patients to achieve their goals for health.

Our birthday box will be catered to both children and their guardians, and include items to celebrate their birthday as well as basic necessities (hygiene/gift cards). Our goal is to encourage connection between medical students and individuals experiencing houselessness, not just over necessities like child care/health/education but also over joyful moments that everyone has a right to celebrate, such as a birthday. In doing so we hope to not only celebrate with these individuals but also bring light to the fact that although shelter/food/health care are integral and essential for all, everyone also deserves to celebrate milestones and the time to care for themselves.thebirthdayboxducom@gmail.com

Application First AidRemember applying to medical school? The personal statement, secondaries, interviews…the agonizing wait?? To get any help, you either had to know someone or spend hours scrolling through reddit. “Medical School Consultants” exist, but cost hundreds to thousands of dollars on top of an already exorbitantly priced application. Application First Aid (AFA) aims to fill this gap by providing free application assistance for medical school applicants. We provide one-on-one mentorship for students from a variety of undergraduate universities on personal statements, secondary essays, and interview preparation. We especially hope to reach individuals who belong to underrepresented groups in medicine. Be an AFA mentor, and help make this process a little better for someone whose shoes you were once in.ducomafa@gmail.com
